I recently returned from a business trip to another part of Korea. On the journeys there and back, I had hoped to read the new pieces on my website from the intercity coach. Reading them there was not easy.
I had asked for the pieces to be put online so that I could review them on the website. That seemed a convenient arrangement. The writing would be there whenever I had a little time.
I have given a good deal of thought to how these pages look: the size of a heading, the place of an image, the consistency of the lists. Those decisions still matter. They can make the text easier to enter. They cannot arrange the circumstances in which someone will meet it.
A page on the website does not tell me much about the circumstances in which it is being read. On this trip, I was the reader who had meant to use the time and did not find it easy. I do not want to make too much of one journey, but it gives me another situation to keep in mind when I prepare a page.
I still want the longer essays here. Some subjects need room for an example, an objection and a second attempt at the question. A shorter note can ask for less at a time. I would like both kinds of writing to have a place, without making every page carry the same weight.
For now, I am back. The pieces I wanted to read on the coach are still here, and I can return to them.
